The 5th CAPGAN Congress on Diarrhoea and Malnutrition is taking place on April 25-28, 2001 in Darwin, Australia and should be of interest to many NGONUT members. The deadline for abstracts and cheaper registration is Jan 31st.
Further details are available on: www.capgan.org/5ccdm.htm
Some of you may be aware of the controversy aroused by this meeting over milk formula company sponsorship. This is now a topic for debate at the Congress, so people with strong views either way should come and express their views at the meeting, which is one of the few international forums for discussion of childhood malnutrition and diarrhoeal disease in the developing world. The meeting will also have a focus on indigenous child health issues because of the Darwin venue.

I am writing firstly to test whether this mail address still works. We need to give WHO an address in order for them to invite you to the Vienna Congress.
Secondly, we are exploring developing a DBL training programme for the inpatient treatment of severe malnutrition. I understand that you have already developed a programme for the relief context. We would be very interested in hearing a bit about it, or even seeing it. We do not want to start duplicating any work that you have already completed, that would be pointless.
All the best

I read your e-mail regarding a " DBL training programme on the inpatient treatment of severe malnutrition", sent to Mike. I am not sure what DBL actually stands for, but might it be some distance learning? If so, you may be interested that Action Against Hunger-UK is currently starting a Distance learning course in nutrition in humanitarian contexts. This is following the success, over the past seven years of the DL course run by the ACF office in Paris, and the need felt to undertake the same in English. This is based on our modules for our fieldworkers which includes the treatment of severe malnutrition.
If you would like more information, Sharon Wright is going to run the programme and would be able to give you more details. Her e-mail is <swatacf.imaginet.fr>
with very best wishes

Dear Frances and Clare. Delighted to hear about these Distance Learning Courses. Do you arrange to do it around a textbook so that the students get more use to using them ? In so many parts of the world health workers are not used to referring to a textbook and may not even know how to use an index. . TALC can I hope supply "Nutrition in Developing Countries" at a lower cost than other sources. David.
