Subject: Looking for A MUAC Insertion Tape

Dear all,

We are in the plannig phases of a baseline survey that will include MUAC measurements, together with lengths and weights of children.

Is there, besides the TALC insertion tape, any other insertion tape that we could use to obtain MUAC?

The TALC insertion tape is, as you know, scaled in 2-mm intervals and is not that easy to read as one must choose a value from three "bands" of values.

Regards and thanks

Dr Osinski

I ran a very large study on refugee and non-refugee schoolchildren in north-west Tanzania and MUAC was one of the tests in the battery. The 'Lasso' MUAC tapes (produced by the Child Growth Foundation, 2 Mayfield Ave., London and purchased through CMS Weighing Equipment, London) were chosen over the Talc (St Albans) and the tapes produced by UNICEF because of their greater ease of use and their greater length. They were easy to read to 1 mm and were almost indestructable. Highly recommended.

Dear Dr Petra Osinki.

Talc has a new long tape. Which has been tested against a 'gold standard' if used for MUAC it needs to be cut short, it gives a figure to the nearest milimetre. I will arrange for a sample to be mailed to you.

The Child Growth foundation also produce one and I will ask them to send you a sample and price.

Would it be possible to send a sample to UNICEF Khartoum/ Sudan, as well, we do support several NGOs in conducting Nutritional Status Surveys among IDP camps it would be useful to try the tape.

Cheers
