Iron-folate supplements for under twos

The Ministry of Health in Sierra Leone is currently developing an Anameia Prevention and Control Programme. Anaemia is highly prevalent (86.1%) and often severe (4.4%) among pregnant women. Studies elsewhere indicate that the levels are likely to be similar in infants/children less than 24 months.

We are trying to find an inexpensive tablet/capsule iron-folate supplement for children less than 24 months. Iron syrups are expensive for resource-poor countries, like Sierra Leone. They also deteriorate rapidly in storage. The recommended dose for infants and children less than 2 years is 12.5 g iron plus 50 ug folate daily. Does anyone know of a tablet/capsule containing this dosage of iron and folate?

Many thanks

Dear Harriet:

To overcome this problem we have instructed the mothers to crush (i.e. between two spoons) the tablets containing 60 mg of iron and 250 or 400 g of folic acid and give the child about 1/4 of the total powder. In other words, the powder from one tablet should last for four doses. Really, each dose does not need to be exactly 12.5 mg of iron and 50 g of folic acid. On average, the children would be receiving 15 mg of iron and 61 - 100 g of folic acid. Even if in one occasion the child receives 30 mg of iron and 125 - 200 g of folic acid nothing major will happen.

Regards,

Fernando

Re: Iron-folate supplements for under twos

I incorrectly stated the dose of iron-folate for under twos in the previous message on iron-folate supplements for under twos.

Correct dosage is:

12.5 mg iron and 50 ug (micrograms) folate
( previously stated 12.5 g iron....)

Apologies!
