Dear Colleagues,

There is going concern that well focused nutritional intervents do not often feature among community priorities. This is so in Zambia and I suppose in many other developing countries.

Zambia has realised the importance of strenghthening methodologies used in Community participatory Planning processes for nutrition improvement.

To take up this challenge, the National Food and Nutrition Commission with support from World Bank and Femconsult, is in the process of producing training manuals that will be used to train Community facilitators and community committees in the participatory planning process.

Keeping in mind that a lot has been done in PRA and PLA and not much in Community Participatory Planning processes especially with a bias in nutrition, we wish to seek information from you colleagues who have gone through this process, to share with us on the lessons learnt and how best it could be done.

We also wish to request colleagues who are aware of any documents related to Participatory Planning Process for Nutrition improvement to help us with that information. We will be very grateful.

Thank you.

Financed by FAO bur also written by FAO! (I wish we could finance more).

Thanks for the free publicity! We also have a 13' video "Introducing participatory nutrition programmes" and hope to get out in the near future (as soon as I can get down to finalizing it) "Preparing micro-project proposals to improve household food security and nutrition", all of which should be relevant.

Dear Prof. Kent

Would it be possible to send copy to UNICEF Iraq, UNICEF is supporting a community based child care units, the units are run by volunteers whom are trained by the PHC staff on screening children for malnutrition; referring malnourished children to the respective PHC centers for further assessment and appropriate interventions. The units are also disseminating health messages and distributing High Protein Biscuit for the malnourished children.

Thank you in advance for your assistance Best regards

Dear Mrs. Aongola,

I am writing further to your message to NGONUT of 7 September. You may be interested to know that FAO - with funding from the Belgian Survival Fund - and in collaboration with the local government in Luapula Province, Zambia has developed and is implementing a participatory household food security and nutrition project.

The project follows a strategy of community action planning. Community members fully participate in the planning process and take the lead in determining needs, identifying solutions, initiating actions and monitoring progress. The project facilitates this open-ended process and provides essential technical and other support services.

The process is described in a recent article entitled: Household Food Security and Nutrition in the Luapula Valley, Zambia published in our Journal Food, Nutrition and Agriculture, for which I include the url:

http://www.fao.org/WAICENT/FAOINFO/ECONOMIC/ESN/fna22-e/resume-e.htm

If you do not have acces to the Internet, please do not hesitate to send an email to our editor, Janice Albert, for a copy of Issue No. 22 of Food, Nutrition and Agriculture on Food Security and Community Nutrition.

For further information on the Luapula project, please do not hesitate to contact me or get in touch with Elizabeth Phiri, National Project Co-ordinator in Mansa.

Good luck with your work!
