Happy New Year to all (I understand it is legitimate until 31/1).

A colleague leaving for Cameroun asked me for a good manual for the set-up of food and nutritional surveillance system. Your suggestions would be welcome to gain a better understanding of what is around in this field (French or English).

Dear Florence Egal!

In connection with the widely publicized Ethiopian famine in the early 70`s, we worked on nutritional surveillance issues for a few years. I am sure there are now more recent publications, but perhaps you may want to look at our experiences and some of the ideas that we had at the time about food and nutrition information systems.

Gebre-Medhin et al. III Initial experience of a consolidated food and nutrition information system. Analysis of data from the Ogaden area. Envir Child Hlth. Monograph NO. 48, February 1977, 28-36.

Gebre-Medhin M. Nutritional Surveillance in Developing Countries, with Special Reference to Ethiopia. Human Nutrition - A Comprehencive Treatise, Vol 2. Nutrition and Growth. Eds Roslyn B.Alfin-Slater and David Kritchevsky. Volume Editors: Derrick B. Jelliffe and E.F. Patrice Jelliffe.

Plenum Publishing Corporation, 1979, 431-441.

Happy New Year and best wishes

Got your message via NGONUT. Regarding info on food & nutritional surveillance, I would suggest the following two pieces as good background:

1. Towards an improved strategy for nutrition surveillance by U. Jonsson, Food & Nutrition Bulletin, vol 16, no. 2, 1995

2. Entire issue of Food Policy, Vol 19, No. 3, ed. Babu & Quinn (Focuses on Household Food Security and Nutrition Monitoring Systems in Africa and contains a number of country examples as well as an overview of SSA).

Of course, much depends on the purpose of the system (national level policy, community based, early warning, etc) but at least these two information sources will get your friend pointed in the right direction.

Best regards,

Vicky Quinn

I asked a colleague for the reference to a book she coauthored, and this is her reply:

It may be a little out of date now, but I do think it summarizes the main

issues in Nutritional Surveillance. It can be obtained by writing to The Cornell Food and Nutrition Policy Program (CFNPP) Division of Nutritional Sciences, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. It is CFNPP monograph 89-2, Advances in Nutritional Surveillance: The Cornell Nutritional Surveillance Program 1981-1987. Authors: Tucker K, Pelletier D, Rasmussen K, Habicht JP, Pinstrup-

Andersen P, and Roche F.
