Hi everybody

We are - better late than never - in process of setting up a "country profile" data base (mainly agro, nutrition, economy). I am sure that some of you are more experienced in this matter than us.

Infos we are looking for:

Many thanks in advance. Keep smiling.

Ariane,

During the ICN conference in 1992 in Rome, I had picked up a software package produced by FAO . It was quite comprehensive . I cannot recall the tiltle . You may write to FAO Nutrition Div to find out more details.

Good luck

Rita

Ariane,

The UN is working on databases: FAO has one on food security and nutrition (accessible on the Web), WHO has several and UNHCR is setting up one. The Worldbank has taken an initiative to link different databases and is working on it in a consultation group on developing a database for Africa to start with. This is done under the coordination of ACC/SCN. It is meant to make good quality data better accessible and to avoid duplication.

The process has started recently and we are far from the final stage. However there are some agencies that have (FAO) or will soon have (WHO) a country based databank available on the Internet. I will not speak on behalf of them but want to let yo know of this initiative.

Also I know that SCF UK is doing risk mapping, computerized, in Sudan, which looked quite professional and combining info on food security, agriculture and nutriton. WFP has vulnerability mapping as well. You will have to contact these agencies however to find out about the details.

Regards

Please note that the Food and Nutrition Division in FAO has been preparing country nutrition profiles (around 100) for the last ten years and is presently revising several of them. By copy of this e-mail, I suggested that further information be provided to you by the staff responsible.

I trust this information can be useful to you.

Good luck for your work...

Ariane,

Regarding your request for country profiles, the Reuter Foundation has recently launched a website called AlertNet. URL alertnet.org, it has a public zone and a private zone. The latter is open only to emergency relief NGOs. It provides them with rolling Reuters news, a reference section with country profiles and a confidential communications area. If you are part of such an aid agency, we may be able to offer you access to this area. If not, please get in touch, as we may be interested in enhancing our existing country profiles, made up specifically for aid agencies, and kept up to date by a Foundation consultant, with nutritional and agricultural information.

Ariane,

The Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) Program which has been

assisting developing countries to implement national surveys on

population, health and nutrition, has a website where you can obtain

information on DHS surveys in over 70 countries. One feature of the

site allows you to obtain data sets.

At DHS we have also produced in depth nutrition materials (chartbooks,

country nutrition reports) on sub-Saharan African countries based on

surveys in those countries. We are in the process of putting all of

our chartbooks on the website... currently only some of them are

there. If you would like more information than is available through

the web page (website address: http://www.macroint.com/dhs/), please

contact me.

FAO has prepared nutrition country profiles for a long time and is now preparing a new format. Associated to these profiles is under construction a computerized data bank, NUTRIDAT. NUTRIDAT contains country data on food consumption and nutritional status of population (anthropometry of children and adults, micronutrient deficiencies). NCP and NUTRIDAT will be available at a later stage in the FAOSTAT domain of WAICENT.

Please find enclosed the list of nutrition country profiles available. At the end of this year 20 NCP will be available in the new format.

We are interested in exchanging ideas and even data on the above issues.
